1 Minute Tips To a Better and Healthier You

Sometimes all it takes is 60 seconds for a small change to make a big impact in your life! Here are some 1-minute life hacks to a better and healthier you:

1. Hug it out – Just one hug from someone you love or care about makes a big difference. And finally science has confirmed what we all knew – that hugging improves mood! A study of 400 participants conducted by the Department of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University confirmed that hugging helped participants feel less negative feelings after some kind of conflict or negative incident during their day.

2. Add Cinnamon to your morning meal – Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Instead of adding sugar, why not sprinkle cinnamon! A study conducted by the College of Pharmacy at Western University of Health Sciences found that cinnamon had positive benefits on blood glucose levels. The study of 543 patients dosed with 120 mg to 6 g cinnamon powder per day for 4 to 18 weeks saw reduced fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Additionally, cinnamon supplementation was seen to increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) in patients. You can sprinkle cinnamon on oatmeal, apple slices or even coffee!

3. Do the daily one-minute plank challenge – planking has plenty of benefits. It helps strengthen the core and works your entire body despite very minimal movement. It works your arms, legs, and abs. Just 1 minute a day can help you in the long run as long as you’re doing it correctly and safely. Here’s how to do the plank correctly

4. Meditate – Just 60 seconds of mindfulness meditation helps you deal with the daily stresses. Psychology Today reported that meditation helps with anxiety, stress and even depression. Meditation reportedly increases brain and immune functions too as well as improves social connections and emotional quotient (EQ).

5. Drink a glass of water water not only hydrates but it also helps with weight loss. Numerous studies have found that drinking a glass of water before meals increases the feeling of fullness so you consume less food to be satiated.

6. Grab a healthy snack – rather than reaching for sugary treats, why not go for a serving of fruit or veggies. One cup of sliced apples has 57 calories, while a small banana has 90 calories and one 100g serving of baby carrots has 35 calories!

7. Stretch – If you’re sitting behind a desk all day, you can benefit from a 1-minute stretch routine throughout your day. Stretching improves blood flow to your muscles, improves posture and offers great stress relief. You can incorporate these stretching and breathing exercises in your day.

8. Wash your hands – practicing good hand hygiene not only prevents you from catching and spreading diseases like the common cold and flu but it also helps keep bacteria in your workplace at a minimum.

9. Put on sunscreen – wear sunscreen every day to reduce wrinkles, sunspots and the risk of skin cancer. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 50 all over your body and reapply according to instructions (especially if you’re under the sun all day).

10. Laugh and smile – a smile or laugh is all it takes to make your mood and day brighter. According to Psychology Today, smiling activates neural messaging in the brain that benefits your health and emotional state. It also activates the release of neuropeptides that fight off stress. Additionally, “feel-good” hormones like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are also released when you smile and laugh.
