What Are The Healthiest Fast Food Options?

What Are The Healthiest Fast Food Options?

When you want to lose weight, the best way to do it is to cook your meals yourself. That way you can control ingredients, portion sizes and cooking method. Unfortunately, you can’t always get hold of fast healthy meals all the time. So here’s what you can order if fast food is your only option.

Taco Bell

The great thing about Taco Bell is you can easily customize your order online. You can either “Make it Meatless” or load up on healthier ingredients like tomatoes, lettuce, beans, or leaner meats.

We chose a Crunchy Taco (soft shell tacos have more calories!) and customized it with chicken instead of beef, we got the 3 cheese blend, additional tomatoes, additional lettuce and finally Pico De Gallo sauce instead of a creamy sauce like ranch or chipotle sauce. Our total calorie count came up to 360 calories for two tacos. A little beyond our 350 calorie limit but that’s ok.

For our Make it Meatless option, we went with the same ingredients but substituted chicken for beans. Our total calorie count for two tacos was 360 calories.

There are healthy fast food options at the double arches but not the ones you think. McDonald's has been trying to add healthier options to their menu and plan to add more by 2020. For now, the healthiest foods to get are the following:

Southwest Grilled Chicken Salad

You get grilled white meat, black beans, a mix of greens, roasted corn, tomatoes, cheddar and jack cheese, poblano peppers and dressed with Newman's Own Southwest dressing. That totals to 350 calories, 11 grams of total fat, 27 grams total carbs, and 37 grams of protein. Our biggest problem is the 1070 milligrams of sodium. That’s almost half your recommended daily allowance of sodium in one meal! Ideally, you should have 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day (even less if you can manage).

Classic Burger

If you’re craving for a McDonald's burger, the best to get is the classic burger. The classic burger has 250 calories, 8 grams of total fat, zero trans fat, 31 grams total carbs, and 13 grams of protein. Ditch the fries which add 230 more calories for a small size serving and go with a side salad with 15 calories.

Want to make that burger Keto-friendly? Go bunless! Ask to substitute the burger buns with lettuce or ditch the bun entirely!

Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfait

If you’re craving something sweet and creamy, stay away from the sundaes and shakes which can have at least 530 calories and go for the Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfait with 150 calories, 2 grams of total fat, 30 grams of total carbs, and 4 grams of protein.

Egg White Delight McMuffin

The Egg McMuffin and Sausage Burrito have almost the same calories as the Fruit & Maple Oatmeal. Most people think that the oatmeal would be lesser but it’s not. In fact, the oatmeal has 10 more calories. The Fruit & Maple Oatmeal has 310 calories, 4 grams of total fat, 62 grams of carbs, and 6 grams of protein. But if you’re trying to lose weight, you should be aiming for a low carb fast food option and stick to 100 to 150 grams of carbs per day. The Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, despite having lower fat content, already has 40% of your recommended carbs amount.

Our pick is the Egg White Delight McMuffin. It has fewer calories than all 3 items (280 calories), has lower cholesterol than the regular McMuffin and burrito, has 29 grams of carbs, and has higher protein content (18 grams).

KFC isn’t the best place to get a healthier option but if you’re craving for some finger-licking chicken? We’ve got you covered.

KFC Grilled Chicken

It’s no surprise that we picked the grilled option. One grilled drumstick has 90 calories, zero carbs, 4 grams total fat, and 290 mg of sodium compared to the original recipe which has 120 calories for one drumstick, 3 grams of carbs, 7 grams of fat, and 380 milligrams of sodium.

KFC Famous Bowl Snack Size

The full sized version is something you should stay away from. The KFC Famous Bowl has 710 calories, 82 grams of carbs, 31 grams of fat, and 2450 milligrams of sodium (that’s more than your recommended daily allowance!). But the snack sized version is much better! It has 270 calories, 13 grams of fat, 820 milligrams of sodium, 27 grams of carbs, and 11 grams of protein. So go for that and pair it with a side of green beans (25 calories).

These are just some of the healthier food options you can try out at these 3 fast food places. Our biggest tip is to ask for healthier options or even inquire about healthy fares from the secret menu.
