The Health Benefits of EGCG in Green Tea Extract

Chinese medicine has long considered green tea a health elixir. Today, green tea and its potential health benefits have attracted the interest from the global scientific community as a possible alternative treatment for a slew of illnesses.
Green Tea vs. Black Tea
Green tea leaves do not undergo the same oxidation or drying process that black tea leaves do. So green tea contains more polyphenols than other teas. According to Healthline, “green tea is about 30 percent polyphenols by weight, including large amounts of a catechin called EGCG or Epigallocatechin gallate”. EGCG is one of the most studied polyphenols and currently used in many dietary supplements including Simply Slender Master Cleanse and Simply Slender Charcoal Lemonade.
What are the Health Benefits of EGCG?
EGCG Increases Metabolism and Promotes Fat Oxidation
Both animal and human studies have shown that EGCG may help the body increase its calorie burning potential and burn stored fat for energy more efficiently.
A 1999 study demonstrated green tea’s thermogenic properties as well as its ability to promote fat oxidation. They found that patients treated with green tea extracts rich in EGCG (90 mg EGCG) had a significant increase in their 24-hour energy expenditure than those from the control placebo group.
Another study in 2007 showed its potential to increase postprandial thermogenesis and fat oxidation in overweight patients given 300 mg EGCG per day.
A more recent 12-week study in 2016 of 115 women with central obesity or excessive abdominal fat found that high doses of green tea extract reduced weight, waist circumference, total cholesterol, and LDL plasma levels without side effects. The same researchers believe that EGCG may be altering levels of the “hunger hormone” ghrelin leading to increased adiponectin levels, a protein hormone involved in regulation of glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown..
Current literature suggests that daily supplementation of at least 90 mg of EGCG (equivalent to the amount of EGCG in 400 mg green tea extract) not only helps to control weight gain but increases daily metabolic energy expenditure and fat oxidation, contributing to a reduction in body fat and weight loss.
EGCG on Cholesterol
Various epidemiological, animal and human studies have shown that EGCG has positive effects on plasma cholesterol.
In 2011, a team of researchers performed a comprehensive literature search of 14 eligible randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,136 subjects and concluded that green tea consumption significantly lowered total cholesterol concentration and LDL cholesterol concentration also known as “bad cholesterol”. The researchers noted that EGCG did not affect HDL cholesterol or “good cholesterol” concentrations.
EGCG Reduces Inflammation
EGCG is a catechin. These are natural antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals, prevent cell damage and protect cells.
A 2016 research examined the usefulness of green tea and EGCG for the prevention of inflammatory diseases in various human clinical, animal and epidemiological studies. The researchers theorized that “EGCG suppressed the gene and/or protein expression of inflammatory cytokines [regulators of the body’s responses to infection, inflammation and trauma] and inflammation-related enzymes”. They found that the results from the animal and human studies indicated the beneficial effects of green tea and tea catechins like EGCG against inflammatory diseases.
EGCG as Alternative Treatment
Though there have been plenty of studies that have demonstrated the efficacy of EGCG, further research is needed to pinpoint the specific mechanisms on how EGCG works on weight, cholesterol and inflammation. Green tea and its polyphenols hold the potential for treating a variety of illnesses from high cholesterol to obesity in the future.
EGCG in Simply Slender
Both Simply Slender Master Cleanse and Simply Slender Charcoal Lemonade contain 100% pure green tea extract rich in EGCG as well as other antioxidants, minerals and vitamins from Noni, Goji Berries, Mangosteen, and Acai juice.
Simply Slender Charcoal Lemonade is the first black lemonade drink in the market to contain EGCG from green tea extract to help maintain a healthy weight, boost metabolism, promote fat burning, aid in weight loss, and lessen inflammation.
As we age, our metabolism slows down significantly. Whether you are looking to rev up your metabolism or looking to lose that extra weight off or just maintain a healthy weight, Simply Slender Master Cleanse and Simply Slender Charcoal Lemonade provides all the benefits of EGCG and more!
