The Health Benefits of EGCG in Green Tea Extract

Current literature suggests that daily supplementation of at least 90 mg of EGCG (equivalent to the amount of EGCG in 400 mg green tea extract) not only helps to control weight gain but increases daily metabolic energy expenditure and fat oxidation, contributing to a reduction in body fat and weight loss.

EGCG on Cholesterol

Various epidemiological, animal and human studies have shown that EGCG has positive effects on plasma cholesterol.

In 2011, a team of researchers performed a comprehensive literature search of 14 eligible randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,136 subjects and concluded that green tea consumption significantly lowered total cholesterol concentration and LDL cholesterol concentration also known as “bad cholesterol”. The researchers noted that EGCG did not affect HDL cholesterol or “good cholesterol” concentrations.

EGCG Reduces Inflammation

EGCG is a catechin. These are natural antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals, prevent cell damage and protect cells.

A 2016 research examined the usefulness of green tea and EGCG for the prevention of inflammatory diseases in various human clinical, animal and epidemiological studies. The researchers theorized that “EGCG suppressed the gene and/or protein expression of inflammatory cytokines [regulators of the body’s responses to infection, inflammation and trauma] and inflammation-related enzymes”. They found that the results from the animal and human studies indicated the beneficial effects of green tea and tea catechins like EGCG against inflammatory diseases.
